45The Copeton Freshwater Swim Committee has had their first meeting to discuss the April 11th 2015 Gwydir Shire Copeton Freshwater Swim. A number of changes to enhance the event were proposed and one of these is the increase in distance of the New England Mutual 2km to 2.5km.

Swim cheque Rotary

Janelle McCosker was proud to hand over a cheque for $5,360.00 Dollars on Tuesday night to Inverell East Rotary. The cheque was the proceeds from the final wash up from the Gwydir Shire Copeton Fresh Water Swim. Alistair Williams accepted the cheque on behalf of Inverell East Rotary and has advised the money will be used on projects throughout the region including the Gwydir Shire. Mr Williams said "if anyone has any ideas on projects they think the Inverell East Rotary Club could be involved in in the area please contact any of the members of Inverell East Rotary and the projects will be considered on their merit."  

Next year's swim will be held on the 11th April next year and planning is already underway and will include a 5km, 2km, and 600m swims.

Ky Hurst his partner Katie Lander and young son Koa created a buzz when they arrived at Copeton Dam last Friday. Ky was very generous with his time talking to anyone who was up for a chat and provided lots of tips and encouragement for those unfamiliar with open water swimming. The Copeton Freshwater Swim Committee are pleased to announce Gwydir Shire Council will for the third year in a row have sole naming rights to the Copeton Freshwater Swim for 2015. General Manager of Gwydir Shire Max Eastcott said. "Gwydir Shire is proud to be an ongoing sponsor of the Gwydir Shire Copeton Freshwater Swim. The enthusiasm and commitment from the organising committee has seen another positive result with 40% increase in numbers. The Council is looking forward to the third year of the event on the open water swimming calendar which is scheduled for 11th April 2015”

With the ongoing commitment from Gwydir Shire the committee can plan next years "Gwydir Shire Copeton Freshwater Swim" with confidence to make the event bigger and better in 2015. The swim format will remain the same with a 600m, 2km and 5km swims with some tweaking to the 5km swim as numbers expected to grow in this event. The 2015 Gwydir Shire Copeton Freshwater Swim will be held on the 11th April in the middle weekend of the school holidays out of respect for ANZAC day being held on a Saturday and the Dam accommodation being booked out on the 18th April by another organisation. The Committee's five year plan to grow the swim into the premier freshwater event in Australia is on track with the ongoing commitment from Gwydir Shire. 


Julian Aenishaenslin, and Madeline Nilon, have taken out the McDonalds 600m Swim and the new event the Sapphire City 5km Swim. Aenishaenslin completed the 5km swim in a time of 1.07.41 and Nilon in 1.15. Jay Kennedy from Tilbuster and Ellie Camilleri from Tamworth won the New England Mutual 2km swim in 28.03 minutes and 30.26 minutes respectively.
